We recently caught up with our Christmas decoration expert, Trudy, from the Crafts at Christmas shop onsite and she shared with us some of the top decorating mistakes to avoid. We thought we’d let you know about them too…
Not cleaning first
If the room you’re decorating is already in need of a clean, then placing decorations around it is going to make it 10 times harder to hoover or dust, so always make sure you have a clean-up first. It’s a great opportunity for a deep clean if you can spare the time.
Not planning ahead
The number one mistake you can make when decorating at Christmas is not having a plan and sticking to it. Going about it in a free-form fashion can make the process stressful, so it’s always a good idea to have notes in place.
Plan out what you will put in each room and what colours you’ll be going with. Note down any new decorations you need to purchase or any that can be repaired/recycled.
Incorporating too many themes
If you want to go all out at Christmas, with many different themes within different rooms, take care as this creates a lot of work for you in the long run when it comes to planning and sourcing all the decorations. It’s a good idea to stick to a consistent theme throughout the house, deciding whether it will be traditional or modern in advance and what colours you’ll use.
Hanging every decoration
Just because you have decorations still sitting in the box, it doesn’t mean you have to use them all. A common mistake made when decorating is using every single decoration and causing the home to look or feel cluttered. Just stick to your favourites and keep it simple.
Not personalising your decorating
People often forget to add a personal touch to their decorations. It’s always nice to add some decorations that are extra special to you or the family, like stockings or baubles and decorations passed down through the generations.
